"I'm just being authentic" has been used as an excuse for all kinds of bad behavior. It was mentioned in the comment section of another conversation that toddlers are given timeouts for being "authentic" and taught to "use their words" when they need something.

So where is the line for adults? When are we too controlled, too tightly regulating what we thing/feel and when are we being over the top and using authenticity as an excuse? Who gets to decide?

There doesn't seem to be a hard and fast answer but Jim Shulman (he/him), Sara Oblak Speicher, MBA and Jeff Mangum were willing to have a conversation with me to try to sort it out.

What do you think? Where is the line between expressing yourself and being overly dramatic?
