Episode 673 - Dominique Moceanu and Dr. Michael Canales are First Class Parents and World Class Gymnasts.

Dominique Moceanu is an Olympic Gold Medalist who became the youngest US gymnast to win gold when she was just 14 years old as a member of the “Magnificent Seven” women’s gymnastics team in 1996, the first US gymnastics team to win the team gold medal. Despite the fact that Dominique suffered a painful stress fracture in her tibia leading up to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, she fought through the pain and contributed significantly to the women’s team’s history-making result.

Dr. Michael Canales was a member of The Ohio State University’s National Championship Gymnastics Team in 1996, Big Ten Conference Championship teams in 1996 and 1997, and served as the team captain of the Buckeyes from 1997 through 1999. Presently a member of the St. Vincent Spine & Orthopedic Institute in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Canales specializes in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery with a special interest in injuries of the Achilles tendon.

Together, Dominique and Mike run the Dominique Moceanu Gymnastics Center where they teach gymnastics, yoga and more.

In this Episode, Dominique and Mike share their parenting journey which includes three children. They discuss how they met and how becoming parents has changed their relationship as well as their perspective on life. They discuss their son Vincent’s hopes to compete in the 2024 Olympics and the balance of teaching him to work hard without putting pressure on him to be in the shadow of his Olympic gold medalist mom and national champion dad. They describe the importance of their faith and the top values they hope to instill in all their children growing up. They talk about going back to diaper duty with their 7-month-old and how they managed through a very dangerous delivery of their third child. They tell us about the Dominique Moceanu Gymnastics Center. They offer some great advice for new or soon-to-be parents and much more.
