A significant life stage for women worldwide, menopause is often associated with physical changes. However, it can also affect cognitive function. This week on Aging Less: The Longevity Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella interviews clinical neuropsychologist Assoc. Prof. Caroline Gurvich on the best practices for managing cognitive health in a woman’s middle age.

An associate professor at Monash University, Assoc. Prof. Caroline Gurvich also leads the HER Centre Australia, a research center dedicated to women’s mental health, as deputy director. Her research interest lies in the neuropsychology of women’s mental health, particularly in understanding how hormones influence cognitive functioning. With contributions to over 120 publications, Assoc. Prof. Caroline Gurvich has been the recipient of several notable awards, and works as a neuropsychologist in private practice.

In this episode, Assoc. Prof. Caroline Gurvich outlines some of the common cognitive changes experienced by women during menopause, from the well-known brain fog, to the lesser-discussed decline in self-esteem. She highlights that, while it’s still not definitively known, those who have had previous episodes of depression or stress and trauma, may be more prone to experiencing such episodes during menopause.

Together, Marie and Assoc. Prof. Caroline Gurvich weigh up lifestyle factors and practical solutions that may help in mitigating the effects of menopause-related cognitive decline, and address hormone replacement therapy as a form of treatment. So, tune in this week for informative insights on navigating this phase with confidence and clarity!
