×Susan makes a confession to Edie in “Every Day A Little Death” and ends up with a whole lot of Martha Huber all over her. Episode twelve begins with the gruesome discovery of Martha Huber’s corpse, which may or may not be smiling. Check out the episode’s intro for an explanation of that one. That kicks off the Wisteria Lane death phone tree as news spreads amongst the housewives. Edie orchestrates a proper farewell for her best friend, but only Susan (out of guilt) agrees to participate. That gives Susan an opportunity to make a significant confession to which Edie does not react well. With Carlos home from prison but on house arrest, Gabby continues her boat show modeling gig. Carlos takes a controversial stance on ownership of his wife’s body, so Gabby withholds some of his coveted fried chicken. He still makes a terrible move against Gabby, potentially ensuring the pitter patter of little feet in the Solis household. Chalk this one up to “They Would Never Let Carlos Get Away With That Today.” “They” would also not approve of Lynette’s subplot where her son Parker is mistaken for a cancer victim, and she leverages sympathies for a coveted spot in her yoga studio’s daycare. Finally, Bree and George continue their rather one-sided courtship, despite Bree becoming sorely tempted by a gift from George. As they drift apart, George gives us strong reasons to worry. Will Bree pay a price for toying with George’s emotions just to torture Rex? “Every Day A Little Death” isn’t a great episode despite a few strong character-based moments. Still, we have fun walking through some of the more bone-headed choices on display. If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here ! Next week, we look at episode thirteen, “Your Fault,” where gardener John’s parents seek Gabby’s help to keep him on a college track despite their very illegal affair. Or click here! Aside from a handful of locks, this year’s limited series race feels rather limited. We break down potential contenders for the final slots. When we broke down Emmy’s 2025 drama series race , we ran into something of an embarrassment of riches when trying to fill the final category slots. Not so with the 2025 Emmy limited series race. We do have a handful of sure bets for limited series nominations: Netflix’s Adolescence , MAX’s The Penguin , and FX’s Dying For Sex . Aside from that, disappointments and critically underwhelming contenders remain. Most thought a highly touted 2024 fall festival launch of Alfonso Cuarón’s Disclaimer would catapult it into serious Emmy contention, but does anyone really love it? Or what about that cast in Netflix’s Zero Day which critics loathed? Despite high profile disappointments, that doesn’t mean there aren’t series worthy of nominations. It’s just a little challenging to forecast those final two slots based on what we have now. We take a look at the 2025 limited series Emmy race and try to figure it all out. But first, Megan previews the upcoming Miami Film Festival, which she will be covering for The Contending. We close our podcast with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week. If you haven’t heard it yet, take a listen to our spin-off series, Desperate Housewives Revisited , where Joey and Clarence look back at the first season of Marc Cherry’s 2004 phenomenon. We’re deeply appreciative for your shares, likes, and positive ratings on Apple Podcasts or Spotify . Or click here! “Move On” shows Desperate Housewives’ Teri Hatcher in peak form as Susan expresses suppressed rage against ex-husband Karl. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Teri Hatcher’s finest Desperate Housewives moments! In episode eleven, “Move On,” Hatcher’s Susan confronts both her ex-husband Karl AND years of pent-up female rage. And she does it via a fairly impressive karaoke version of “New York, New York!” The episode heavily leverages Hatcher’s natural gift for comedy and served as her official Emmy submission for the freshman season. The actual Emmy winner, Felicity Huffman, finds herself saddled with a “Tom Scavo Is the Worst Husband Ever” plot line. Here, not only does a late night chance encounter with nude nanny Claire entice him to bone Lynette, but he also just can’t stop starting at Claire’s breasts! Hilarity ensues in a plot line that would look very, very different today. Lynette and Tom, at the mall searching for a new water heater (?!?) also bump into Gabby, modeling the new Buick LaCrosse (PLUG! PLUG! PLUG!) to make some spare cash while Carlos sits in jail. Of course, the best lines of the episode belong to Marcia Cross’s Bree. It turns out being a stay-at-home mom of two bratty kids and caring for your ailing estranged husband puts a tiny wrinkle into your dating life! Meet George the Pharmacist (played by the great Roger Bart) who will be a very consequential figure in future Desperate Housewives lore. “Move On” doesn’t actually move forward much of the Mary Alice plot, but we do get several great character moments and memorable performances from our talented cast. Plus, there’s far more Edie Britt this time! If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here ! We’ll return with another podcast exploring episode twelve, “Every Day a Little Death,” next Thursday. Or click here! We come a long way, baby. Joey, Megan, and Clarence celebrate their 500th episode of their 10+ year podcast partnership. On December 8, 2014, Joey, Megan, and Clarence joined Awards Daily TV’s Craig Kennedy to kick start the Water Cooler Podcast. We’ve had a few iterations along the way (and a shift to a new name for The Contending) and several guests, guest hosts, and celebrity interviews. Now, we’re celebrating our 500th episode with a Megan-designed quiz for Joey and Clarence. We also offer several remembrances from our over 10 years of covering pop culture. We close our podcast, as we have for 500 episodes, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week. If you haven’t heard it yet, take a listen to our spin-off series, Desperate Housewives Revisited , where Joey and Clarence look back at the first season of Marc Cherry’s 2004 phenomenon. “Come Back To Me” boasts more series-best work from Marcia Cross thanks to a delicious rivalry with sex worker housewife Maisy Gibbons. The tenth episode of Desperate Housewives , “Come Back To Me,” again finds us in awe of Marcia Cross’ ability to wring moments of brutal honesty from campy melodrama. Here, Bree discovers Rex has certain needs… sexual needs met only by Maisy Gibbons (guest star Sharon Lawrence). When Bree confronts Maisy, it reveals a weakness in Rex that Bree is all-too-ready to exploit. We also further explore the central Mary Alice mystery as Susan discovers her daughter, Julie, secretly harbors Zach Young in her room. Gabby struggles to deal with life absent the newly imprisoned Carlos, but she discovers he’s not as innocent as he proclaims. Finally, ever competitive Lynette faces a new challenge: is the new nanny a better mother than she is? She launches into the very early 2000’s world of the nanny cam to find out. Our revisit of “Come Back To Me” sees us exploring larger Desperate Housewives themes. We also chat about how it establishes plot lines that will run through the end of the first season. It’s an unexpectedly deep episode that had us in a contemplative state of mind. We even talk about the sexual proclivities of suburban men, including the practicality of using stilettos. If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here ! “Suspicious Minds” focuses on Gabby (Eva Longoria) as she attempts redemption only to have the world pulled out from under her. Desperate Housewives’ ninth episode, “Suspicious Minds,” Eva Longoria’s Gabrielle Solis takes center stage. That, again, causes Joey and Clarence to marvel at how critics and audiences took Longoria for granted in the original run of the series. On a second watch, she’s one of the brightest stars in the series. Here, Gabby’s attempt at redemption leads her to orchestrate a charity fashion show. Unexpectedly, the Gabby / John relationship explodes as Susan and John’s mother, Helen, find out. Shockingly, that isn’t the biggest of Gabby’s problems this episode. “Suspicious Minds” also features Susan and Julie further evolving the Mary Alice drama. When Zach escapes his psychiatric ward, Julie agrees to hide him in her room without Susan’s knowledge. There, Zach reveals details about potentially suppressed memories involving Paul, Mary Alice, and the mysterious Dana. Lynette needs a nanny, putting Felicity Huffman on the back burner for the episode after a massive, multi-episode storyline. Finally, Bree and Rex become increasingly divided on how to address Andrew’s total lack of remorse for his recent illegal actions. This and much more as Joey staggers through the recap following a wine club. This you have to hear to believe. If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. With the Oscars behind us, it’s time to turn our focus to the 2025 Emmy Awards. We kick things off with a look at Drama Series. The Contending’s own Jalal Haddad joins Joey, Megan, and Clarence to kick-start our look at the 2025 Emmy race. We start with the Drama Series category where only Apple’s Slow Horses remains in contention out of last year’s 8 nominees. So, what joins it in this post-strike climate? We break down all major Drama Series contenders from HBO / MAX, Netflix, Apple, Hulu, and many more. Will past nominees Squid Game , The Handmaid’s Tale , House of the Dragon , Severance , The Last Of Us , and more return? Will Netflix’s The Diplomat break out after receiving strong support from SAG / AFTRA this year? Or will The Diplomat , The Pitt , or Matlock make their first foray into the Drama Series race? Find out our first thoughts on the season! We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week. If you haven’t heard it yet, take a listen to our spin-off series, Desperate Housewives Revisited , where Joey and Clarence look back at the first season of Marc Cherry’s 2004 phenomenon. Be sure to check out our recent interview with Mrs. Huber , played by guest star Christine Estabrook. The Contending welcomes Christine Estabrook, Desperate Housewives’ very own Martha Huber, as we look at her final episode, “Guilty.” Desperate Housewives Episode Eight, “Guilty,” is another thematically heavy episode. It also marks the final live appearance of one of Season One’s most beloved characters, Martha Huber. In “Guilty,” Bree and Rex deal with the fallout of Andrew’s hit-and-run accident, but Bree’s far more concerned about Andrew’s total lack of remorse for putting Mama Solis in a coma. Gabby and Carlos struggle in their own ways with the accident, and Gabby wrestles with her guilt and justification for her now-ended affair with John. Lynette struggles with the influence of the ADD medication and the guilt over her perception that she’s a bad mother. She experiences a crisis that only her friends can help her through. Meanwhile, Susan makes a discovery about Mike, the ramifications of which could end their relationship. But the real star of the episode is Christine Estabrook’s Martha Huber who has a fatal showdown with Paul Young. We’re not feeling guilty in welcoming Christine Estabrook to Desperate Housewives Revisited to discuss her memories and iconic performance on the series. Does she think Martha Huber was “gone too soon?” Find out the answer to this and more as Joey and Clarence chat with the Desperate Housewives guest star. If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here ! Or click here!
