Birth work is a demanding, unique miracle, where not every birth begins in life. With the stats for Black birth outcomes so very high, it is imperative that doulas are trained and empowered to support families that face fetal demise and stillbirth. Please join Birth While Black producer/host Denise Bolds and her special guest Nneka Hall, an expert in the field of perinatal bereavement. Nneka Hall is a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness advocate with a primary focus on infant and maternal mortality within the African American Community. She is the founder of the Quietly United in Loss Together Campaign which is a Pregnancy And Infant Loss Awareness campaign designed to raise awareness of all types of loss from conception through a child's first two years of life, teach healthy fertility through womb health education, provide support to families who suffer these losses and provide support for programs so they won't close due to inability to afford supplies. Following the stillbirth of her daughter (Annaya Marie), Nneka sought out ways to aid others in having a positive birth outcome. She stumbled across the doula profession and needed to learn more. She is a full spectrum doula, holding certifications as a birth, bereavement and postpartum doula. She is a certified International Bereavement Specialist, a Certified Community Centered Herbalist, and Womb Health Specialist. Ask yourself: As a birth worker, did my training include complete training on fetal demise, stillbirth or perinatal bereavement? Or was I instructed to read a book about it? About Dr. Worth: Jaqueline Worth, MD, graduated from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. She has been an obstetrician for nearly 20 years, her practice, Village Obstetrics, is one of the top practices in NYC. She lives in New York City with her family where she spends most of her time delivering babies at Mount Sinai Hospital. About THE NEW RULES OF PREGNANCY: Finally, a calming pregnancy book that cuts through the noise to tell expectant mothers exactly what they need to know—and what they can stop obsessing about and over-researching. In The New Rules of Pregnancy, two leading OB-GYNs guide you, the modern pregnant woman, through all aspects of pregnant life in an easy-to-digest, compassionate, and motivating way. Instead of a detailed week-by-week look at your baby’s development, it’s all about you, and how to help your pregnancy go as smoothly as possible. It assumes an intelligent, busy reader (who, somewhere inside, is shouting, “Just tell me what to do!”). Every aspect of pregnant life is covered: from the practical details (how to fly pregnant) to the complex issues (“What makes it postpartum depression?”) The book also covers that critical “fourth trimester” “Nursing” and “How to Feel Like Yourself Again” because once the baby is born, self-care typically goes out the window, and you really need someone to have your back. Its strong point of view and expertise come from gynecologist Adrienne Simone and obstetrician Jaqueline Worth 2 renowned New York doctors dedicated to bringing patients the safest, calmest, least invasive pregnancies possible. The book’s voice motivating, supportive, real comes from Danielle Claro, coauthor of The New Health Rules.…

Please join producer/host Denise Bolds and co-host Nikia Lawson in a hearty discussion on the paradigm of ‘centering’ and the necessity of education in Black births. Centering & Pregnancy is an evidence-based health care delivery model that integrates maternal health care assessment, education, and support. Patients meet with their care provider and other group participants for an extended period of time, at regularly scheduled visits over the course of their pregnancy. Centering promotes patient engagement and community-building, and has been shown to signi?cantly improve infant health outcomes. Health outcomes for pregnancies, speci?cally increased birth weight and gestational age, and the satisfaction expressed by both the women and their providers, support the effectiveness of this model for the delivery of care. https://www.webmd.com/baby/features/centering-yourself-healthy-pregnancy#1 Denise Bolds can be reached: www.BoldDoula.com denisebolds@gmail.com 845-797-4177 Nikia Lawson can be reached: https://www.facebook.com/DoulaBirthBlessings/…

A new definition of high blood pressure (hypertension) 2017 (Please note that all numbers refer to mm Hg, or, millimeters of mercury.) The guidelines, in a nutshell, state that normal blood pressure is under 120/80, whereas up until recently, normal was under 140/90. Now, elevated blood pressure (without a diagnosis of hypertension) is systolic blood pressure (the top number) between 120 and 129. That used to be a vague category called “prehypertension.” Stage 1 high blood pressure (a diagnosis of hypertension) is now between 130 and 139 systolic or between 80 and 89 diastolic (the bottom number). Stage 2 high blood pressure is now over 140 systolic or 90 diastolic. Let’s talk about how these new parameters will affect pregnancy, birth AND Black pregnant women. Speaking about Matrona with Whapio Diane Bartlett! At The Matrona, we believe that childbirth is a transformative event and pregnant women have access to altered states of consciousness that allow them to have an expanded perspective of life and of themselves. This culminates in the birthing process. We realize that many women desire to be witnessed, rather than managed, in this extraordinary experience. In our Matrona Doula Program we put a different spin on what it really means to support and witness a woman and we explore what it means to nurture a mom during her childbearing cycle. Whapio Diane Bartlett. Whapio has been an Independent Midwife for over 30 years, attending women and families in birth and educating women in the Arts of Midwifery and Healing. She also teaches Homeopathy and is affiliated with HANA (Hahnemann Academy of North America). Whapio has studied homeopathy and Qigong with Robin Murphy, ND for over 20 years. She has also studied healing at The Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Beijing Massage Hospital in China. Whapio is a Community Mediator and counselor for family concerns. She speaks and writes frequently about Quantum Midwifery and Returning Birth to the Family. She didn't have to die… Kyira Adele Dixon, age 39, she was a vibrant, amazing woman, wife and mother who walked into Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for a scheduled C-Section, April 12, 2016. Kyira would not walk out, she would not get skin-to-skin, to breastfeed, to watch her sons grow up. Kyira did everything the right way and it was still not enough to save her life. She is a Black woman in America giving birth and that could lead to death. Kyira’s story is not unusual, but comes to light because of the family she married into; her mother in law is Judge Glenda Hatchett – We watch Judge Hatchett on TV everyday, never imagining something like this could happen to a person of her stature and amazing work. Fetal positioning is vital in birth. As a baby is born, alignment facilitates the type of birth a person may have/exposed to. Birthworkers are constantly facing this paradigm, with training and education being absent. Gail Tully, founder of Spinning Babies has changed all of this. Gail Tully is the midwife from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA who conceived and developed Spinning Babies. Spinning Babies went online in 2001. Over 35 years with birth including 20 years as a homebirth midwife, Gail now consults and goes out on midnight runs to long labors or breech births to help the determined parents served by her midwifery and medical colleagues. Back in the day, Gail was kept busy organizing doula program development in hospitals and community non-profits in Minneapolis/St. Paul while training doulas with DONA International approval status. As feminism migrates to the internet, full-spectrum doulas remain focused on life’s physically intimate relationships: between caregivers and patients, parents and pregnancy, individuals and their own bodies. Birth work is evolving in 2017 with a major event in maternal health happening: March For Moms May 12 -15, 2017 in Washington D.C. Why is this so important? The U.S. has witnessed a rise in mothers dying in childbirth or due to pregnancy related causes. There are many reasons for this increase including poor access to healthcare, discrimination, lack of information about family planning options, & healthcare provider shortage, among others. Due to these barriers, the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality out of every industrialized country. Maternal death for American Indian/Alaskan Native and non-Hispanic Black women is 3 to 4 times more likely to happen compared to White women. Over 50% of maternal deaths are preventable; we want your help to raise awareness including need for State-Wide Maternal/Fetal Mortality Review Boards. DONA International is a proud sponsor of this major movement in awareness and advocacy! Please join Denise Bolds, producer/host of Awake in Birth 2017, with special co-hosts: Ginger Breedlove, CNM, Ph.D., FACNM serves as Director of American College of Nurse-Midwives, Inc.
