Welcome to "Dark Tides: Smugglers of the North Devon Coast." we are going to explore three centuries of smuggling, wrecking, and maritime intrigue along North Devon's rugged coastline. From Hartland Point to Exmoor's sea cliffs, this dramatic shore concealed countless secrets contraband goods, hidden caves, midnight landings, and the daring men and women who risked everything in their dangerous trade.

By the end of our journey, you'll understand why they called this the "Smuggler's Coast" - and why the legacy of these outlaws still echoes in the quiet coves and harbour towns of North Devon today.

Our journey will take us through remote coves where casks of French brandy were hauled ashore under moonlight, into the homes of local families who played both sides of the law, and along treacherous cliffs where fortunes were made and lives were lost. We'll explore not just what happened here, but why examining the economic pressures, geographical advantages, and complex moral codes that made smuggling not just profitable but, in local eyes, entirely justifiable.

So pull up your collar against the sea mist, keep your voice low, and watch for the signal fires... we're entering the shadowy world of North Devon's smuggling past.
