CONTENT WARNING: THIS PODCAST EPISODE MENTIONS SUICIDE. IF YOU ARE CONTEMPLATING SELF HARM OR SUICIDE, PLEASE REACH OUT FOR HELP. One in five Americans are dealing with a mental health issue on a day-to-day basis. You aren’t alone, I promise you. If you’re in crisis, in the United States, you can dial 988 from any phone. In any other part of the world, call your local emergency response number to be connected to someone who can help, or go https://blog.opencounseling.com/suicide-hotlines/ for a list of direct support numbers by country. If you are struggling with thoughts of self-harm, an organization that I both support and highly recommend is Hope For The Day . They’ve helped thousands, including me. They can help you, too. Visit HTTPS://WWW.HFTD.ORG to find free or low-cost mental health help in your area. Reaching out for help isn’t a sign of weakness: it’s a show of strength. That’s not a platitude. The best thing I ever did for myself was to get help with my mental health, and I’m stronger because of it. I want that for you too, my friend. It’s okay not to be okay. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= FOR TINNITUS INFORMATION AND HELP, VISIT HTTPS://WWW.ATA.ORG. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SHOW NOTES: Silence is a very interesting teacher, especially the lack thereof. In this episode, I reflect on the beginnings of the pandemic, and how I came to an uneasy truce with anxiety over it by remembering a transformative experience at a Zen monastery. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= CREDITS: Theme Music: "Memories" (Sappheiros) Used by permission (No Copyright) SAPPHEIROS.BANDCAMP.COM Background Music: Copyright © Nature Healing Society—Used by permission. Like most GenX kids, radio was important to me, and as an introvert, even moreso. I'd hazard to say that radio was my first "best friend," and one on-air talent in particular set a course for my life... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= CREDITS: Theme Music: "Memories" (Sappheiros) Used by permission (No Copyright) SAPPHEIROS.BANDCAMP.COM Background Music: Copyright © Nature Healing Society—Used by permission. WHAT IS THIS PODCAST? As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m starting a new “low-talking” podcast called “I Miss Lockdown” as a way to give back to the introvert community as we all deal with the “re-opening” of society after the lifting of most Covid restrictions. To be honest, most of us hard-core introverts didn’t really deal with lockdown in the same way our extro friends & relations did. Our experience was rather different. They were busy losing their collective $#!t from not being able to go to Applebee’s on a given Tuesday while we were all catching up on our streaming services or crushing people in some online gaming community like normal. That’s not to say that we weren’t negatively impacted: we certainly were, and frankly, I personally feel that we all have a bit of PTSD from the past three years. But if I’m being honest, there are things about lockdown that I… miss? The quiet. The slowing down of life. The focus on self-care. The feeling—however brief and fleeting it may have been—that we were all on the same side again. That we were all pulling for each other, hoping the best for each other, giving a $#!t about our fellow humans again. Now I don’t want you to think this is a podcast exclusively about lockdown life, although that will likely be a touchstone for quite some time. I’m looking at this more as a friendly introvert voice keeping you company, talking at times to other introverts, sharing experiences, and keeping fellow introvert listeners company for a while. In that way, “lockdown” acts as a metaphor for the introvert life, and it’s not something I’m moving on from. It’s a core pillar of who I am. So I’m here to invite you in, and to ask for your participation in helping me build this into something that will help someone out there feel seen, validated, and at times, less alone, maybe while having a laugh and some insightful conversation along the way. A few ways you can help: Email me some thoughts about your life during—or after—lockdown. How are you doing? What are you feeling about the world right now? What—if anything—were positives of this period of cultural isolation? How did it affect you? Email me at COMMENTS@IMISSLOCKDOWN.COM . Eventually, I’ll have a system in place -via- SpeechPipe to take voice comment “calls” from the public, and use them on the show, all right from your phone, mobile device, or desktop. That feature will be available on the website (which should be available sometime tomorrow) IMISSLOCKDOWN.COM . And if you’d like to support the podcast with a financial contribution of any size, you can do so by donating to the NBBN patreon page at: https://www.patreon.com/NBBN I hope you decide to participate in some way, and I’d love to hear ideas on what you as a listener would find fun, enjoyable, entertaining, comforting, or valuable in a podcast like this.
