I am a Certified Life Coach who helps moms embrace the relief that comes from finding emotional freedom around your child’s future. I have had a child die, I have a child who lives with anxiety, and I have a child who lives with a life-threatening allergy. I used to go at facing this all alone. Until I found a life coach who would help me process all of the fear I was having about my children’s futures. I got certified so I can help YOU. I know the worry. I know the fear. I know the stress that feels like it will never end. I know the sleepless nights where worst case scenarios run over and over in your brain. Not just about your child’s survival, but also about just simply making it through tomorrow. I know the strain it can put on a marriage and relationships in your life. I’ve felt the crippling anxiety waiting for the doctor to give me life-altering news. I know the pain of sitting in the back of an ambulance with my child in anaphylaxis. I know the aching need to help your child who can’t breathe due to their anxiety of stepping out of the car. I know how you feel. I have been able to process these fears and figure out REAL steps forward for me and my children. Yes, my children as well. The tools I continue to learn and teach them have helped my son with anxiety finally stay in the classroom when he is taking a test. I have learned how to teach my other son with a life threatening allergy to stay calm when he is faced with his allergen, and stand strong when he is the only one at an event NOT eating the dessert. I have used these tools to process losing my first son, and look back on the woman who went through that with so much respect and love. We have each found real steps that are propelling us towards a better future. There will come a day when you don't spend every moment in fight mode, ready to run away and hide from the next problem. I want to give you one thought that can help you in ANY situation. This, right now, this life that you are living is a dream come true. Life is Hard. Guess what? I agree. These things are hard. Being challenged in any way is hard. Telling yourself “this is hard” just doesn’t help. “I wish this was easier” is a similar thought. You are wishing yourself out of the situation you are in. I get it-there are many trials in my life that I wanted to WISH away. But-you know as well as I do, that just doesn’t work. We are humans, so we go through hard things in our lives. That is just a fact of life. Sometimes, when we are in a really good mindset, that is enough. When you tell your brain “I don’t know”....how do you feel? Do you feel indifferent? Do you feel motivated? Do you feel helpless? Do you feel confused? When you allow your brain to rule your world , when you allow your brain to make decisions all on its own, it will almost always tell you I don’t know how to do this. This is when you get the opportunity to answer your brain. I love answering my brain, if you’ve listen to me much, you know that I talk to my brain a lot. I almost treat my brain like it is a totally different entity than me. When my brain tells me“I don’t know how to ask my mama about her feelings“ I answer my brain. Now-I don’t mean that You need have to answer to your question right away. What I mean is that…….I might say “that’s interesting, you have definitely asked your mom her feelings before“. In this episode, Chelsea interviews Brittany Homer, the Co-founder and Executive Director of Project Stand, which is an organization that empowers parents, youth, and communities to use technology is healthy ways. Brittany has always believed that with the right tools and support there is no limit to a child’s potential. With that in mind she received a Master’s Degree in Family and Human Development and became a Certified Family Life Educator. Her education has helped her recognize and respond to many threats children and families face today. She is Co-Founder and Executive Director of Project STAND, where youth, parents, and school communities are empowered to use technology in healthy ways. She is also Co-Founder of Safe Tech Solutions, a collaboration of nonprofits who provide K-12 media safety education. Brittany has advocated for important policy changes at the local, state, national, and international levels. In 2023 Brittany spoke with delegates and activists at the United Nations about the harms of pornography to children, and the role of parents and governments in keeping kids safe online. She believes there is so much we can do to address these issues, and is proud to be a part of the solution. Brittany has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Sexual Assault (SANE) Advocate, is a member of the Safeguard Alliance (a task force of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation), and is creator and host of the podcast, Raising Today’s Kids. Brittany loves to spend time in the mountains of Montana where she refreshes herself to address the magnitude of digital dilemmas our kids face. She is an optimist and loves linking arms with others who have hope for a bright future. She and her husband feel so blessed to have four children who inspire her to fight to protect all children. I had the amazing opportunity this week to host one of my coaches and mentors on my podcast. Misty Springer truly helps women BECOME. Become what? When you or your child are going through something hard, you can help them process what is really going on. You can be the friend that sits next to them and says "That’s really sad”. "That must be hard." "I’ve felt sad before too." It’s okay to acknowledge the sadness. You don’t have to resist, react, or avoid feelings. You can actually get really really good at feeling them. This week we are talking about why thoughts matter in the first place. When it comes down to it, humans truly believe that our circumstances create how we feel. My child has a food allergy-I feel stressed There are 47 things on the floor in my living room, I’m feeling overwhelmed. The airport is 2 hours away-I feel anxious My plane got delayed, I feel frustrated. She told me she doesn’t like my shirt-I feel offended. My husband never makes the bed, I feel underappreciated. The teacher doesn’t priortize my child’s allergies, I feel powerless Each of these examples is a circumstance, followed by a FEELING. But I want to show you that something happens in between the fact that is present in our lives and a feeling that is in our bodies. Think about that. Something happens in between the fact and how we feel about it. It is a THOUGHT. We have a thought. We then have a feeling.…
Every thought that comes into your head is not a fact. This will not be popular when you suggest it to your brain-but I promise you it is true. Your child’s allergy does not determine the level of fulfillment in their life. Their thoughts about it do. Your mother in law's scathing words do not determine the outcome of your relationship. Your thoughts about her words do. Your child looking in the mirror does not determine the level of her self esteem. Her thoughts about what she sees, does. The beautiful thing here is...you get to choose what thoughts you give time and space to. ...And the way you choose to think about the facts in your life is what determines the outcomes of your life. I used to have this friend, I named him my brain bully. Whenever a thought would come into my mind that created an emotion like fear or anxiety or sadness, I would blame it on my brain bully. Then I realized that my brain is on my side. It’s not a bully. It actually wants the best for me. It just knows that sometimes it’s ok to feel sad. It’s ok to feel angry. It knows that my body needs to process human emotions, and it is giving me an opportunity to do so. Of course your brain suggests thoughts to you that FEEL like they create negative emotions. But what if…you just needed to learn to make those emotions your friend? Sadness and fear and anger can all be your friend. Is it possible to do away with anger? To overcome it? I actually think it is possible. I have known people in my life, namely my grandfather, who did not express his anger. That doesn’t mean that he didn’t feel it sometimes. We all feel anger sometimes-it is an emotion. When I feel anger it feels RED, even hot in my chest. When I feel anger it feels heavy through my shoulders and my palms get sweaty. I think I feel angry because my kid lied to me. I think I feel angry because my the guy in the big blue truck cut me off downtown. I think I feel angry because someone said words to me that I didn't agree with. What is relief, anyway? A feeling of reassurance and relaxation following release from anxiety or distress. Sign me up. Just reading the definition made me take a big deep breath. I think I was trying to WILL the relaxation into my body just from reading the words on the page. Is that how it works? I kind of wish it was. But then I wouldn't have experienced so much growth from doing the work to find relief in my life. and I wouldn't have experienced the joy that comes from being able to create relief, ON PURPOSE, any time I want. My biggest fear is fear about the future. What's Yours? Fear that my kids won’t choose a career that can sustain the lifestyle they desire. Fear that they will lose their next football game. Fear that the next time my son eats a peanut, he will have a reaction. What about fear of a future conversation-maybe with an in law, an estranged family member, or a doctor? We all experience fear. The issue is that we think fear is bad. I disagree! I think fear is telling us something. Hello! Be aware! This is coming up in your future! Hello! You might want to put some extra thought into this future conversation or vacation that is ahead. I think it is so nice of our brain to warn us ahead of time of things that we might need to be aware of. Learn to do whatever it takes to take just A TINY bit of the power away from the fear. Your mom should call you, fix your meals, let you roll your eyes and still babysit your kids. Your kids should take out the trash, clean their rooms, do their homework and practice their instruments-all with a smile and without being asked. Your husband should give you a giant kiss when he gets home from work, have all the energy in the world to take over kid duties, and be ready to run the 5 errands you have on a list for him-may I add-all with a smile. Want to know how I am so good at telling you about manuals you might have for people in your life? Because I am so good at having them, myself. I have manuals! We all do. A manual is an instruction guide we have for someone in our lives about how we would like them to behave so we CAN FEEL GOOD AND HAPPY. We generally don’t tell the other person what’s in our manual. I believe that we are on earth to learn to become like Jesus Christ. Jesus was the master of managing his mind and his emotions. He felt compassion for the woman well. He felt yearning for friendships. He felt lonely in the Garden of Gethsemane. He felt proud when he performed miracles. He felt disappointed when Peter denied him 3 times. He felt angry when people were selling things in the temple. He felt humbled when the leper believed he could be healed by the Savior. He felt shunned when the samaritans spit on him. He felt happy when he started his public ministry. He felt sad when Nicodemus chose not to follow him. I have felt sad, happy, humbled, disappointed, angry, and lonely... Just Like Jesus.
