The uniquely focused Guangdong Baiyun University Center for American Race and Culture, established by Johnson C. Smith University and funded by a generous grant from the US Embassy in Beijing, will set the African American experience within historical and contemporary contexts through books, multimodal digital documents, streamed media, and faculty and student exchanges. A nuanced view of racial issues through physical and electronic resources will be provided to Chinese audiences to promote an understanding of America and provide a lens for self-examination and grassroots U.S.-Chinese engagement. These podcasts will be a central part of that effort, and we’re excited bring this podcast to you.

From Amazon.com: This book illustrates that the idea of a 'national' literature is profoundly problematic. Chapters on boundaries and crisscrossing show how a nation and its writers' works do not exist in isolation from their history. Stressing migration and (inter)cultural dialogue, authors explore how the characters in the texts establish a sense of belonging both within the context of migrations and within the context of Lithuania since its independence. Smith University sent three scholars -- William Brashears, Yvette Hall, and Jemayne King -- to three American Cultural Centers to present on aspects of race in the United States. In this podcast, Yvette Hall of Johnson C. Smith University ("Ethnic Hair Care and Entrepreneurship in America") examines race through the intersection of hair care and corporate culture following a brief question and answer session, in which she is joined by William Brashears of Arizona State University ("Discussing Race in America: Whiteness Studies") and Jemayne King of Johnson C.
