I'm back chatting with Sam. We are both big fans of Zappa and Beefheart and my plan for this episode was that we would talk about them and their music. We started out there, but we quickly moved on. Take a listen. There's one line in there that really blew my mind. We were talking about being creative, and I've never thought about this before, but one second something's not there, and then it is. It's as if by magic..... If you enjoy listening to this podcast please share with your friends, subscribe, review, comment, and all that stuff. Thank you so much for listening. Love and peace to all.…
I'll come straight out with it - we go well off the tracks in this one, but I've had to leave the title as it is because we already have a Part One. We talk about Hippy slang - What the Indians thought of the Hippies - A bit more about Glastonbury - Where did the Hippies come from - Now and the future - and other stuff. I hope you enjoy listening to this latest episode of `Talking with the Hippies. It was great fun to make, and I'm hoping Rob and I will be back in a few weeks to explore other areas of Hippie life. To make sure that you never miss an episode, just subscribe to Talking with the Hippies on whichever app that you use to listen to your podcasts. xx Love and Peace to all xx…
In this episode I am talking with Rob Taylor. Rob got in touch with me in connection with research for his PhD project at Oxford University. Normally I get to ask the questions, but in this episode my guest was the host and I got to relax and come up with the answers. This is a two part podcast episode. Subjects include, Hippy Politics, Psychedelics, The Hippie Trail, India, Books on the scene, Hippy slang, The origins of the Hippies, Where are they all now, and more. I really enjoyed every minute of making this episode - so many good questions - truth be told, we could have kept talking, and who knows, maybe we will. Remember, if you enjoy my podcasts, please like, review, comment, and/or share with anyone else who you think may also enjoy listening to them.…

In this episode I chat with Sam Dodson. Sam is an artist - check out the episode art, and was once a musician in a band - check out the music - Loop Guru 1996. I would say, definitely more than me, Sam has stuck to his creative principles. I'm paraphrasing here but it roughly goes along the lines of 'Don't follow the money, and if you need to eat.... well, something usually turns up'. We chat about art, music, life, creative writing courses, and much much more. It's been the most enjoyable time recording and putting this episode together - I hope that you enjoy listening to it too. If you like this podcast, please remember to do all the stuff you are supposed to do including, liking it, reviewing it, subscribing to it, and sharing it. Thank you all for listening. Talking with the Hippies went live for this one, and what a great night it was. Beautiful music, Beautiful audience, and my son Josh as a guest. We talk about what it was like to grow up on Dartmoor with two hippies for parents. We also talk about Josh's career as a comedian, and we also work in a few bits and pieces about life in general. My thanks to Rose Ellis for helping to put this show together, and for performing at the gig, along with Simeon and Kuki, Chris and Sheila, and Fred and Marlowe. Rose also wrote and performed the music used on this podcast episode. My thanks to Andy at Ashburton Arts Centre for hosting the evening. Talking with the Hippies Live will be back in town on January 13th 2025. Make a note of that date, or book your ticket or whatever, and if you enjoy listening to TWTH, if you subscribe you should hopefully receive a notification of every new episode.…

In this episode I'm back talking to my friend Alan Clayson about growing up in the Sixties, with the Beatles - obviously not with the actual Beatles, but surrounded by the culture that they were a huge part of. This is by no means a comprehensive account of those days, but hopefully it might give you a flavout of those halcyon days.…

In this episode I talk to Georgina Grant, who grew up as a mixed-race child in the 1960s. Since I was very young I've always felt very sensitive about race issues. Unbelievably, this is the first time I've ever actually sat down with someone of a so-called different race and talked about it. I'm really grateful to Georgi for agreeing to do this recording with me - it means a lot. How is racism even a thing - it just sickens me!…
In this episode of Talking with the Hippies I chat with Oliver Bosence. Olly's father was a teacher at Dartington Hall School in the 1960s, and Olly was a student there at the same time. I was very keen to find out how he feels now about the progressive education that he received there. We cover a lot of interesting stuff, including many of Olly's memories of what life on the estate was like at that time. I hope that you enjoy listening to the podcast - please do share the link with anyone else that you think might also enjoy it.…
In this episode I talk to my old friend Mark Rashid. Mark has many strings to his bow. He is an author, a luthier, a horse trainer, a philosopher, and most important of all, a nice bloke. We do start off chatting a little bit about horses, but hang in there - it's all very relevant to what comes next. I hope that you enjoy the listen - I certainly enjoyed putting it together.…

In this episode of Talking with the Hippies I chat to Alan Clayson, about his new book, Get Yer 'Air Cut. I always enjoy making my podcasts, but for me, talking with Alan felt like visiting old times. Let's just say I'm pretty sure we would have been good mates had we met up in the 60s, Give it a listen - it might just be a classic episode! By the way, the music is courtesy of Alan's band, Clayson and the Argonauts. I had to pay 79p for it, so I hope you enjoy it.…

In this episode I get to talk with smallholder and back to the land campaigner, Chris Smage. Chris has written a couple of excellent books, A Small Farm Future, and, Saying NO to a Farm-Free Future. The titles say it all really. I enjoyed talking with Chris. I agreed with almost everything he said - sorting out our food production and looking after the land absolutely has to be central to our well-being as a species. Sometimes I think 90% of what we do is just a bit daft really. What have we gained from all the so called progress that we have made. But then again, without some of that progress this podcast wouldn't be happening now. I guess some of you might be thinking that would be a good thing too. May love and peace prevail. Best Wishes Tom…
In this episode I chat with Robert Norris, an old hippy from California. In the 60s we grew up in the shadow of the Viet Nam war. Thankfully, Harold Wilson, the UK Prime Minister at the time, refused to get involved, so in the UK we were spared the draft. But for American kids it was serious life and death stuff. 58,220 Americans lost their lives in a war which history tells us was fought largely for the benefit of the arms industry. This is the story of one American growing up in that shadow.…
All of life continually searches for comfort. And people are no different. We all have ideas of how we can individually make our own lives more comfortable, and some of us never stop wondering if the human race can one day collectively find a better way to live. I'll be honest, I'm not sure about that myself, but my doubts don't stop me dreaming. Hope that you enjoy Part 2, there's one more episode of this mini series recorded which I will put up in a week or two. Please share and so on with everyone that you know who may be interested. Reviews and plugs anywhere and everywhere always appreciated. Love and Peace Tom…

This is one of the conversations I had when I recently visited Tipi Valley. I'm chatting with Axle who is the guy who first recommended that I visit. We talk about communities, anarchism, politics and so much more. I don't really know where to start when it comes to telling you about this place. It has profoundly changed so much about the way I look at life. To me it slightly felt how it felt in the 60s living on the edges of the festival scene. Like when the fence came down at the I o W, and the authorities had to accept the inevitable - the people were in! I met some beautiful people - some fierce idealists - and some just sheltering from the storm. There are a couple more episodes still to come from this visit, and I am so looking forward to my next visit when I am hoping to record more. The place is a gold mine! Love and Peace to everyone, and please do share and review etc. if you enjoy listening to my podcast.…

In this episode I chat with Mark. We have a lot of common interests including the history and philosophy around alternative living from the 60s onwards. Mark talks openly about his involvement with the hard drugs scene - a scene that I know very little about. A big thank you for this - clearly not the easiest thing to discuss. We also talk about what happened to the hippie scene after the 60s - something I really do want to get into discussing in much more depth. If you enjoy listening to my podcast please do subscribe to make sure that you get to hear every episode. Release times are a bit erratic, but I do have some interesting stuff planned for future episodes. Love and Peace Tom…
Part Two of my chat with Miranda and Simeon. In this episode we talk about what it is like to bring up a family outside the state education system. I do accept that some people do find the subject of Home Education quite contentious. I want to make clear that I am completely aware that loads of kids are perfectly ok within the school system, and so are their parents, and that is just fine. During this session it became obvious that there was a lot more on this subject that we could talk about - we ran out of time - I'm hoping to return soon to record Part Three. Please share my podcast with friends who you think may also enjoy it. As always, making the podcast has been great fun. Thank you for listening.…
In this episode of Talking with the Hippies I take a break from history, and move the focus more on to what is actually happening now. I chat to Miranda and Simeon. We cover topics like Life, Living in a community, eco housing, sustainable living, and raising a family outside of the State Education System. I spent a lovely few hours in the permaculture community that they live in. I've got to say it - it was right up my street! And thank you for such a lovely lunch. All the music is courtesy of Simeon - Thanks so much for that too. If you enjoy listening to my podcast please do share the link with your friends, and please remember to follow on your podcast app - that way you will always know when a new episode is published. OK, I'm slightly misleading you with the title there. We do touch on the festivals, and they are definitely events that I do want to go into in much more detail, and my guest definitely did go to those festivals, but it turns out he wasn't really there either, if you get what I mean. Today in Talking with the Hippies I am chatting with Chris Wilko. Chris is an old hippy, a musician, a poet, a philosopher and a storyteller. This episode is a collection of classic 60s memories and let's just say, I think we have definitely captured the feeling of those glorious days here! All the music and poetry in the podcast is composed and performed by Chris. Recording this, and putting it all together as an episode of a podcast has been such fun. I do hope that you enjoy listening to it, and if so please can I ask you to pass the link on to any of your friends who you think may also enjoy it. Also, if you can remember the festivals, the clubs, or in fact any interesting events and stories about the subculture of the 60s onwards please do feel free to get in touch with me at talkingwiththehippies@gmail.com.…

In this episode I chat with Paul Justison. Paul grew up in Tuscon, Arizona and along with 1000s of other hippies in the USA, he moved to Haight Ashbury in 1966. What can I say about Haight-Ashbury in 1966/67. Some say it's where the scene all started out. Obviously it's not - it was happening all over - but for sure right at that time some amazing things were happening there. We chat about the music, the politics, the scene in general, Viet Nam, the draft, and some of the stuff that happened next. Chatting with Paul about the scene in the USA in the Sixties was amazing. I've got to say I relaxed right in to that beautiful West Coast pace there for a minute - how on earth did my life get so hectic! Thanks for listening to my podcast. And remember, if you want to help fill in with any info/stories/thoughts about those momentous and sometimes glorious days of the Sixties/Seventies and onwards, please do get in touch at talkingwiththehippies@gmail.com Don't forget to share the link with your friends, and follow, like and review my podcast. In this episode I chat with Andy Roberts, who is without doubt one of the most knowledgeable people in the field of psychedelics that I have ever met. We cover a lot of ground, but somehow it feels as if there is still so much more. We may have to have a Part Two. We also go over some interesting Operation Julie stuff - just couldn't resist it as we are both already quite deep in to the subject. On the subject of making podcasts, I really do like it when I come away from the recording session, and I'm thinking, 'Wow, that's a good one'. That happened with this one. In this episode of Talking with the Hippies I'm back on to the subject of Operation Julie. I'm on a road trip to the Arts Centre in Aberystwyth to watch a performance of 'Operation Julie - A Rock Musical', followed up by a question and answers session with some of the main characters involved at the time. It's really is all very interesting stuff, and as you might be realising by now, I'm getting quite involved in the whole adventure (that's code for, I'm pretty certain there's more to come on this subject shortly). My travelling companion on this journey is John, who in the 1970s was known to a lot of people as Blue. Blue figures in at least a couple of the books that have since been published about Operation Julie. The journey is an ideal opportunity to ask Blue a few questions about his involvement in the story. I hope that you enjoy listening to this episode of the podcast. In this episode of Talking with the Hippies, I chat with Chris Voisey, and get to listen to some of his poems. Chris grew up in Plymouth during the 50s/60s and has been writing poetry all of his life. I was lucky to get to look through some of his early journals - all the poems are dated and written in beautiful handwriting. I really struggled with poetry at school and have never been near it since, but I have to say, I really did enjoy listening to Chris's work. As the recording went on I found myself being taken to a deeper place within myself. I hope that you enjoy listening as much as I did. The music on this podcast is a gift from my friend John Allen. He doesn't know it yet but I am saving up all the tracks he gives me to make up in to one big 'musicfest' podcast in due course. If you enjoy listening please do give me a follow, a like, or a review. Or even better, plug the podcast to your friends. Love and peace Brothers and Sisters.…

In her recently published book, 'Flowers through Concrete', Juliane documents her ten years research into the hippy scene behind the Iron Curtain. It is an amazing subject, and an amazing piece of work. To be honest if you had asked me a year ago I would have said 'No, I don't think that could possibly have ever happened", but it did. In this episode my guest is Steve Bentley, who worked in the drugs squad as an undercover cop in the 1970s. Where to next for Talking with the Hippies - I started with a plan but the plan has gone. Things very much seems to be going where they go. If you were involved or connected in any way to those heady days I'm after any stories connected to the entire culture - the music, the media, the festivals, the hippy trail, the politics, the US scene, etc. etc. - in fact any memories at all that you might like to share with the listeners of this podcast. In this episode I chat with my friend John Allen. In the 60s we used the word 'cool' a lot. Looking back I can see that I put a lot of effort into trying to be 'cool'. I tried not to make problems, and I tried not to over-react to problems. I tried to keep a level head - not always an easy thing to do in some of the circumstances we found ourselves in. Why am I saying this - because spending an hour recording this podcast with John, made me feel as if I had lived through those years in a pretty tame way. All the music in this episode is composed and played by John. If you have enjoyed this podcast please Like, Review, and most importantly, Share with anyone else who you think might also enjoy it. That difficult second podcast! Take it from me, if you enjoyed listening to episode one then you'll love this one too. My guest today is Rose Ellis. Welcome to episode one of my new podcast. The vague plan is to build up an audio archive loosely based on the events and culture of the Hippy era - roughly speaking 1965-72, plus maybe some of what happened next. I've got two more episodes in the can, so after that, it kind of depends what happens next - It could be a series of three! My first guest is my old friend, Mr Ken Phillips. We met in 1970 and since then we have shared a few adventures along the way. I really enjoyed our conversation - I hope that you do too. If you have friends that you think may also enjoy this podcast, please do share the link. Also, if you have any memories from those heady days, that you think might be good to add to the archive, please do contact me on talkingwiththehippies@gmail.com . I'm keen to talk about the music, the festivals, the media, the lifestyle, the philosophy, the politics - and pretty much anything else at all connected to those days really . Don't forget to subscribe to 'Talking with the Hippies' to make sure that you get to hear episode 2. Thank you to my dear friend, Hurricane Rodriguez for the music - hopefully lots more to come. Love and Peace brothers and sisters - fifty years on and it's still the best!…
