Ayush Gangwal Ayush Gangwal is a freelance Architect based in Aurangabad, Maharashtra and is currently working on various residential and institutional projects across the country. He was an Associate Architect at RMA Architects and has previously worked locally in firms from Aurangabad and in Mumbai such as Case design and S + PS Architects. He has also worked internationally with firms like Palinda Kannangara Architects in Colombo and Sou Fujimoto Architects in Tokyo. He has a keen interest in architectural research and was a part of the core research team for the State of Housing exhibition organized by the Urban Design Research Institute(UDRI) & the Architecture Foundation. What is KVDF? The Kurula Varkey Design Forum is one of the largest student organised architectural forums in the country. Since its inception in 2000,it has strived to critically question the discipline of architecture and its manifestations at the given time through student projects as take-off points. The forum invites undergraduate student projects from over 100 architecture schools across South Asia, of which a few are selected as generators of the discourse. The forum further invites practitioners, academicians, and young graduates from across the globe to participate in curated discussions exploring pressing subjects and themes vital to the discipline.This year the forum brings together final year projects from various architectural schools to foster discussions on current debates with a focus on the role of architects in the evolving context of intertwined complexities of human-non human, architect-client, privileged-marginalized, iconicity-adaptability, collaborative practice-independent practitioner binaries that have inherently influenced the practice and discourse of architecture. About the conveners Akshar Gajjar is a fresh graduate from Faculty of architecture CEPT University. He interned at Busride Design Studio in Mumbai and then went to ETH Zurich for an exchange semester. His research interests lie in imagining architecture as an adaptive threshold for human non-human relationships to flourish. His research thesis “Adapting Multispecies Studies into Architectural Thinking” is a step forward in developing a new lens and method of looking at the built environment. Heer Shah is a fresh graduate from Cept University.She has worked with Masaki Kato in Tokyo, Japan. She feels that the lines between an architect, urban designer, interior, product designer etc is quite blurred and believes all of this lies under the realm of design. She has worked on various projects ranging from design of an amplifier to a Tamagawa Metro Station in Tokyo. Her final year project was on criticism in architecture, and challenged the tendency to iconize the architectural project - Sangath within our disciplinary discourse by a persistent curiosity to understand it as a part of the built environment, assessing its viability and limitations through a systematic inquiry into the conditions and consequences of its design. Ujjvala is a 23-year-old architecture graduate with a strong inclination to right all things wrong in the world, yet knows that solely a propensity to do so is not enough! She believes that architecture is something that initiates curiosity and a constant demand for logic and hopes to continue navigating through various new avenues of design and research, all the while learning through her experiences. He was the Public Relations for the National Association of students of Architecture (NASA) India, and later the Advisor. DECCAN AMALGAM Deccan Amalgam is a Hyderabad based, architecture studio that was founded in 2016 by Sneha Parthasarathy and Zoha Razvi. The studio’s design and research initiatives are aimed towards improving the team’s interaction with the city , its topography, landscape, history, infrastructure, politics and people. Deccan Amalgam, as a studio, believes that every space in the city, no matter its scale, affects the city and the way we inhabit it. They are interested in understanding the relationship between any given space or situation and its larger, natural and human made context. This penchant, for deciphering the complex web of inter dependencies that influence the built environment and not just the end product, is the focus of our process. Through their projects they are constantly trying to understand the ever changing world and how as a design studio we can make an informed intervention. Having spent most of his childhood and working years in the middle east he has witnessed the dramatic growth and urbanisation of new cities, ground up. TAHIR NORONHA Tahir is a young architect who works as the convener of the Charles Correa Foundation in Goa, where he leads a team of Fellows engaging in urban design projects in the city as well as research and publications on architecture as a whole. A graduate of the Goa College of Architecture, most of his experience has been in design to conserve heritage — both natural and built. Tahir’s areas of interest are social work, planning and public policy, and in his free time he is an active member of several citizen-action groups in the city of Panjim (where he was born) and in the village of Neura (where he now lives). TUTOR: KAIWAN MEHTA Project Description The political will of bringing a neighbourhood stimulus was to attenuate notional boundaries which are always porous and allow metathesis of activities to adapt to an expanding culture. Our built environment is a physical and tectonic object that has an expanding life and evolving history relating to ecologies that are influential on the way we understand the architectural elements and the way meanings and ideas of any material changes. Introduction to the idea of a neighbourhood began with the realization of numerous activities which are indissociable activities comprising an impalpable form of a fabric that we know as our neighbourhoods. By looking at the neighbourhood as a reflection of a combination of events, activities, and thought objects, the idea of this project is to insert a 'pacemaker' in the ageing heart of the town. The site is an abandoned factory premise which once boasted of a landmark building in a much unconscious industrial heritage of the vicinity. The design intervention functions like a machine that runs the city while its site edges are composed of municipal ward offices overlaying with other public activities. The conceptual framework and its integration allow substantive movement for people to reminisce and revive the past to serve a present purpose while its form and tectonics give birth to an exploration of changing times and networks. Thus, by living through the process of history and heritage, the user is immediately enticed by a rich sense of the existent past and an awareness of the present. The architectural form provokes a powerful discourse in regards to the social responsibility of public functions to enrich shared urban spaces. Understanding the scale and the volumetric language that interacts uniquely to both - the inside and the outside, the facades become an archaeological scenery providing physical and metaphorical intimacy with times past, concerning profused ideas associated with Time, Public and Architecture.…

BIJOY RAMACHANDRAN Bijoy Ramachandran is a partner at Hundredhands Design, a Bangalore based architectural practice. He currently serves as the Design Chair at BMS College of Architecture, Bangalore. Bijoy has an undergraduate degree from Bangalore University and a masters degree (in Architecture & Urbanism) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has also attended the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass. Apart from architecture he has also produced two films on the celebrated Indian architect Sri B.V. Doshi. Both films have been nationally and internationally screened at colleges and film festivals. SUNITHA KONDUR Sunitha Kondur is a partner of Hundredhands Design, a Multi Disciplinary Design Practice Based in Bangalore. She has a Bachelors degree from BMS College of Engineering and a Master’s Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. She went on to work as a project manager with the Mass State College Building Authority and was Senior Project Manager for the prestigious Houses at Sagaponac Project in New York before returning to India in 2003. An alumnus of the Kamla Raheja Vidhyanidhi institute for architecture and environmental studies, he finished his BArch in 2018. During this time, his thesis called Garden of Reconciliation- has won numerous awards which also include the National Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Thesis organized by the COA. This project was also short listed as the top 20 projects across the world in Archiprix 2019 for which Jay was the only Indian to be shortlisted in the history of the award. His projects have also been showcased at multiple forums in the country and outside including GAFA in Guangzhou China. Jay has been working on a project in Nagaland since 2017 in close association with the indigenous tribes and the government body there. Working in such a remote area and many other such contexts within the country and outside has rendered a certain sensitivity to his perception of architecture. BABA SASHANK graduated from JNAFAU, Hyderabad in 2010. He worked at Mindspace, Bangalore with Ar. Sanjay Mohe. An avid reader and illustrator of comics since childhood, he occasionally squeezes out a graphic novel or two when not consumed by architecture. His other passions include graphic design, script writing and street magic. VINDHYA GUDURU got her bachelors in architecture from CSIIT, Hyderabad in 2009. In the course of her extensive travel, she worked with many prominent firms in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Auroville on projects scaling from high end developments to contemporary interiors. She graduated from Pratt institute in New York with masters in Interior Design. Developing patterns and exhibition spaces has always been a passion for her leading to recognition and publication of her works. Together they started Spacefiction Studio in 2015 in Hyderabad. Intended to be a blend of design disciplines with architecture as the base, the firm handles projects of various scales and nature. Experienced in shaping the architecture and interiors of large scale housing, institutions, research labs and commercial spaces, the studio often dabbles with everything related with design and art. University in 1994 and then pursued his Masters from University of Texas in 1995. Before forming his own practice in 2003 he worked with reputed firms like R.P.G.A. design group in Texas and with Somaya & Kalappa Consultants in Mumbai. Kiron Cheerla Architecture is committed to the design of buildings, not just its function, appearance and spatial quality, but also deals with other important factors like context, client, materials, technology etc. The firm’s interest is in working critically with the site and coming up with the best possible solution for the given program. The most important quality of the work is the architectural experience. The work tries to recall the fundamental elements of architecture, which enables them to work at any scale, with any material, with any program and ignoring the question of style. PRIYA TADINADA is a graduate Architect from JNAFAU (Hyderabad) and a Masters student of Design for Performance and Interaction at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL (London, United Kingdom). Her inquisitiveness - that stemmed from understanding Architecture as more than a subject taught amidst four walls instigated her love for travel. Exploring countries, workshops and internships during her course of study, she developed an undying passion to design spaces that consist of what more than meets the eye - an experience. She believes that the subtle blend of architecture and the human emotional connect is what brings a space to ‘life’, which she aspires to create through her work in the near future. Alongside being an interdisciplinary designer in the making, she enjoys climbing mountains and uses photography as an art of storytelling. She held a solo exhibition titled “Where Next?” in 2018 (Hyderabad, India) that captured moments of her travel stories into an abstract visual memoir. TANAY BOTHARA is an Architect and a self-taught photographer. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture from PVP COA, Pune in 2018. In the same year, he won Asia Young Designer Award 2018-19 in Singapore for his architecture thesis. He was also awarded a scholarship for a design course in Harvard Graduate School of Design, Massachusetts. He has interned with Bijoy Ramachandran, Hundredhands, and is currently working with Bijoy Jain, Studio Mumbai. His love for travel, architecture, and photography is linked with a common thread of minimalism. Along the way of his solo travels through the wild and the cityscapes, he observes the dichotomy of man and nature, imbibing cultural nuances of the people he meets and taking inspiration for his art. He has cycled through various states of India, spending one month in each state. Cycling up the Himalayas, through barren desert land, along backwaters, and down highways, he has traversed all sorts of terrain on his two wheels.
