Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, mejor conocido como el Cid Campeador, es la figura histórica más representativa de la identidad ibérica, y es también el protagonista del primer monumento literario de la lengua castellana: 'El Cantar de Mio Cid'. Fueron tan grandes sus hazañas que, muchos años después de aparecido el cantar de gesta, continuaron en boca de la gente en la forma de romances, ese género de poesía narrativa en versos octosílabos, modelo de la poesía popular castellana, que sobrevive hasta nuestros días.
