“I used to be the largest dairy consumer on the planet. I used to eat so much dairy and meat. The more that I looked into the dairy industry, the more that I saw that it was the singular, most inhumane industry on the planet, that we've all been lied to, including myself, for years. I always believed that the picture on the milk carton, the cow standing next to her calf in the green field with the red barn in the back was true. It’s certainly the complete opposite.” – Richard (Kudo) Couto Richard (Kudo) Couto is the founder of Animal Recovery Mission (ARM), an organization solely dedicated to investigating extreme animal cruelty cases. ARM has led high-risk undercover operations that have resulted in the shutdown of illegal slaughterhouses, animal fighting rings, and horse meat trafficking networks. Recently, they released a damning investigation into two industrial dairy farms outside of Phoenix, Arizona supplying milk to Coca-Cola’s Fairlife brand. What they uncovered was systemic animal abuse, environmental violations, and a devastating betrayal of consumer trust. While Fairlife markets its products as being sourced "humanely," ARM’s footage tells a very different story—one of suffering, abuse, and corporate complicity. Despite the evidence, this story has been largely ignored by mainstream media—likely due to Coca-Cola’s massive influence and advertising dollars.…

×This is a great podcast with Dr. Louise Kirz, who was interviewed with autistic advocate, Sam Way, a few weeks ago. Here, she shares more about anesthesia and the ways someone can advocate for themselves with anesthesiologists and more. Please see synergyautismcenter.com/podcast for more podcasts. Today, I am expanding on my blog post about The Telepathy Tapes. Please find the original blog post on my website: www.synergyautismcenter.com Ky Dickens actually seems in support of autistic spellers and keyboarders. The podcast, however, is about telepathy. It is not about whether or not autistics can use augmented means to communicate like using a keyboard or letter board. My concerns are squarely on the fact that autistics should not be used to prove telepathy when their communication using these augmented means is already under fire by so many. I worry (and it has been confirmed) that speech language pathologists and others who criticize the use of letter boards and/or keyboards to communicate now have additional fodder to weaken the legitimacy of autistics communicating in these ways. My concerns were recently confirmed when I joined a respected speech and language pathologist “watch party” where we all watched the actual videos of the autistics on the podcast communicating their telepathy. As the videos were played, the argument was NOT on whether they were telepathic but on whether or not they were even communicating. The majority of the participants were arguing that they were not actually communicating anything let alone telepathy. I very pointedly argued that the tapes were NOT to prove communication but to prove telepathy. Therefore, they should not be under fire for whether or not they were communicating. While they did shift their conversation and agreed with me, my point was made in that setting and not in so many more conversations. People across the world listening will now question the legitimacy of a vulnerable population communicating through means that are already questionable and in dire need of further research. Next, I spoke with a friend who is autistic and a magician. He turned my attention to James Randi, The Amazing Randi, who was a magician who turned his work to people using “magic” to trick people into believing they are telepathic, speaking to God, the deceased, etc. and getting money for it. He thought it was tragic and criminal, of course. My friend (Jonathan Chase, if you know him) helped me consider that one of the many ways to “trick” people is to use a vulnerable population in their providing “proof." Because then if you voice your doubt, you are speaking against a vulnerable population - which we just wouldn’t think of doing, right!? ugh. I never intended to imply that Ky Dickens was against Autistic people using Spelling and Keyboards to communicate. In fact, she seems to be in support of it. The podcast's focus is on telepathy, not on whether Autistic people can use these tools to communicate.…
Episode #72: Part 1 in our Series on Anesthesia and Autism. In this podcast, I was lucky enough to sit down with both a fabulous anesthesiologist who happens to have two autistic children as well as a wonderful autistic man who is trying to understand an upcoming procedure requiring anesthesia. I learned so much about anesthesia through this discussion and I hope you do, too. Correction: "MAC stands for minimal alveolar concentration not minimal anesthetic concentration. It’s the concentration of the gas in the lungs."…

My friend, Blake Baxter, shares his diagnosis story and we are collaborating on a podcast series regarding the ambiguous concept of empathy. This is part 1 of our series together as we venture together to figure out what is the definition of empathy and why it is assumed to be missing in those with autism when we have seriously different experiences. This is truly just part I. We know this is a bit of a hodge podge to get us going. We will be reviewing books on Empathy, going deeper into his diagnosis, and more. It seems there are a few things at play that are landing autistic people on the wrong side of the law. I have now been involved in two sexual assault cases, numerous aggravated assault cases, and two theft cases. Listen in to hear more about how we can keep autistic teens out of trouble with the law.…
Today, I want to share a bit about what I have learned happens for many autistic individuals and some ideas for alleviating it. This is the experience of what I am calling "perception - chaos." For details on this podcast, please visit:
Today, I thought I’d return to a common dilemma faced by parents and professionals supporting autistic individuals and that is the concept of favorites. Most of us neurotypicals have lots of favorites like favorite colors and favorite foods. But many autistic individuals struggle with the concept of favorites and may be unable to answer the question “which one is your favorite?” when presented with 2 or 3 nice and positive choices. Why!? What is going on? For more information regarding this podcast, please go to: https://synergyautismpodcast.blogspot.com/2021/08/episode-58-mp-trouble-with-favorites.html…

I had a very special guest join us, her name is Yasmine White and she is the founder and CEO of Voices Together which is the largest music therapy organization in North Carolina. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Yasmine by my good friend and colleague, Jonathan Chase who some of you may be familiar with from previous podcasts. Yasmine and I had a lovely conversation where she described music therapy and her curriculum specifically. She inspires the audience to understand that music lives within all of us and calls parents to share music with children of all ages and abilities. I used to think the “wait and see” approach only affected little ones before the age of 2 or 3. Parents bringing their children in with concerns about social engagement and medical professionals stating that the child is still within normal limits so let’s “wait & see.” The hope being that the child would outgrow the lack of engagement, not yet saying words, or having what seemed like extreme reactions to sensory information.…
In this 10 minute podcast, I talk about balancing who is running the show. I have many client children of all ages who will either lead or follow but the in between is challenging. Sharing the lead or switching it up is essential for full well rounded development and well being.
Short one today to celebrate the awesome fathers out there. Take a listen!

For years people assumed that autistic people did not feel emotions in themselves or recognize them in others. By consulting with autistic adults, we now know this may be the exact opposite of the truth. They actually feel emotions more intensely than many of us. It is the ability to organize and make sense of those emotions in themselves and others that is confusing and overwhelming, causing them to either shut down or have what seem like overreactions. Today, I am sharing one of my go-to tips for helping a person understand the passage of time across days as well as engaging with you in a bit of review and even planning. Let's call this the Today/Tomorrow Activity or routine. It's something I recommend doing towards the end of your day together and typically for parents to do with their children of any age.…
Happy Mother’s Day today and everyday to all the moms listening. This podcast was recorded with you in mind. It has been a tough year for everyone but my hat is off to all moms who have taken on the additional demands of stay-at-home orders including online schooling, cooking and cleaning more, and enduring the emotional roller coasters of all those in your home. I have learned so much from each of the amazing mothers who I have been blessed to get to know through my work. You are warriors for your children. You tirelessly research so much that most you should have honorary degrees in autism, neuroscience, and/or pharmacology. I know you have exhausted days when you don’t think you can do any more...but you do anyway. I know you lose your shit sometimes and find the strength to apologize. I know that you cry when no one is looking and your child is not around. I know you have times when you feel no one is listening, caring, or even paying attention to you, your child, your family. But yet again, somehow you pull yourself up by those boot straps and give your precious energy to your child who needs you and your strength. I wish for you today that you find a moment or two to find a little something that makes you smile today. Have that cup of tea or stay in your jammies all day even if you still have to care for others, maybe you can find something that makes you smile. Call that friend, hug your partner a little longer than you usually do just because. Let go of something in your to do list so you can breathe. Add something that feeds you even if small. You deserve it even if you don’t think you do or you think you can’t possibly find the time. Buy yourself flowers or ask someone for help with something you usually take on yourself. I see you and I know you matter.…
I’ve been hesitant about doing a podcast this topic. It has been coming up more and more in my work and I still do not feel like I am an expert. But then I realized that as a cisgender and neurotypical Mom, I will actually never consider myself an expert on the topic of AutiGender. I can admit that and share what has helped me learn and support those who have autism and are gender diverse.…
Teens with and without autism can be tricky to talk with sometimes. But there are some basic tenants to keep in mind that should make conversations not only more relaxed but more connected and two directional.
I have a lot of parents who come to me uncertain as to how to really get into the mindset to play. We are all in our busy lives full of to do lists and schedules. It is hard to get in the moment and relax enough to play and sometimes even when we try, we are left not sure what to do! I created this podcast for those of you who are wanting to learn how to find your playfulness that works to support your child with autism to play with you.…

In this podcast, Barb O'Neill and I talk about the importance of play for connection in our lives, especially with young children and since this is an autism based podcast, especially young children with autism. I’ve invited Barb O’Neill here for this podcast. She is an expert in play and child development. I appreciate Barb’s approach in early childhood to really step up the play and engagement with children - especially those with challenging behaviors. Barb shared a little bit about her background and how she came to this passion of working with children and teachers. Barb and I talk about how play is possible for all children of all ages and how important play is for true connections with one another and also within ourselves. In the autism world, we often get hung up on skill development and we forget the importance of play. To add to that, people with autism tend to avoid uncertainty which means that they may avoid little kind-of playful moments. We as well meaning professionals and parents then avoid them too. So we stop playing. Barb shares a couple of pointers for how to engage that seemingly harder to engage child in play. Then she shares a few sneak peeks into the upcoming conference: April 28 - May 4th. Barb coordinates this amazing conference every year for early childhood teachers. You will not want to miss it! The conference is April 28-May 4th and If you’d like to sign up for this conference: https://barbavila.krtra.com/t/zGkbj7no2ECp I’ll also be doing a little daily discussion throughout the conference in my Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/SynergyAutismCenter Play and imagination are essential for learning how to connect with ourselves, our thoughts, our emotions, and with each other. It is an honor to have had Barb O’Neill join me for this podcast and for motivating us to find ways to play with the children in our lives. And here is your special link to register for the FREE conference! https://barbavila.krtra.com/t/zGkbj7no2ECp…

I really enjoyed giving a Facebook live presentation a few months back and people seemed to like it, so I turned it into a podcast! Listen in to this podcast where I review the one practice that can help anyone feel heard, seen, and respected. This simple seeming practice can make a world of difference for someone. It builds trust and allows authentic connection. In this podcast, I share why it is necessary, when to apply it, and the steps for how to give someone processing time. Enjoy and if you want more, please stay tuned for my book coming out this Summer 2021! I go into this and other topics in much more depth for an even better understanding and application. For individuals on the spectrum, sharing control within interactions for learning can be limited. If they control the situation, they are not open to new ideas or ways of doing things. Today I’m giving you the golden ticket for helping someone you know think for themselves. That golden ticket is for you to resist the urge to solve problems for someone with autism. And if you, yourself, have autism, you can ask those around you to stop solving problems for you!
I am talking today about our neurobiological systems working on overdrive and I call this “riding high.” I see most of my clients “riding high” so frequently and so often that it is their norm - so that others around them do not even know it is happening for them. I had an older client once tell me, autistics may not know what “safe” really means so I should reframe the conversation to simply “avoiding danger.” For more information about this track, please go to https://synergyautismpodcast.blogspot.com/…
I know you hear it all of the time: it is important to take care of yourself so that you can care for someone else. However, I want to give you even more reason to take care of yourself and introduce you to why couple-care and friendship-care is equally important for modeling a home filled with rich and satisfying relationships. Imagine always feeling drained and unmotivated. Maybe you are the one experiencing this. It would be so frustrating and you would consistently blame yourself for simply not working hard enough or not sleeping well enough or not being motivated enough. But what if it were a biological event that you didn’t have enough energy? What if being in a heightened state of sensory overload for a good majority of your day, exhausts you? What if you never even felt what it would be like to be relaxed except when you were sleeping? Well, I’m here to share what some other people both outside our autism community and within it have shared that help them.…
