Nymphing 102 Crash Course | TFC #10 by The Fly Crate Podcast by TheFlyCrate.com
In TFC #09, Colton covers the basics of all things nymphing. Tune in to learn how to setup tight-line nymph rigs. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:11 – Today’s topic: Nymphing 101 Crash Course to cover the basics of nymphing 00:25 – 80% of a trout's diet consists of subsurface aquatic insects (nymphs & larvas) 01:05 – Fish at their level 01:14 – Put the nymph as close to the feeding fish as you can 01:20 – Fish are going to become bottom feeders during the Fall and Winter 01:35 – Midges are a constantly hatch during the winter months. These can be a reliable food source for fish. Shop our Midge & Euro nymph patterns at TheFlyCrate.com/fly-fishing-flies/nymphs-wets 02:12 - Fish the flies slow and low in slower pools and pockets 02:20 - Use an indicator in faster/deeper currents that you can not get close enough to 02:30 - Colton covers the uses of different types of indicators. Hard body indicators like a Thingamabobber can support heavier flies 03:00 - Yarn indicators like the New Zealand Strike Indicators are great for subtle takes and light flies 03:20 - Tab style indicators float high and never sink but you can not adjust it. Once it is on it's on 03:58 - Adjust your indicator so that it allows you to fish 1.5 to 2 times the depth of the water. So if the pool is 5 feet deep, position your indicator 7.5 to 10 feet up from your flies 04:22 - Instead of an indicator, you can use a dry fly 04:35 - Colton goes into specific detail of Euro-style nymphing and how you can convert your rod to tight-line or Euro-style nymph. In TFC #08, Nate talks about how to get rid of those icy guides. Tune in to learn how to keep the ice off during the winter months. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:25 – Today’s topic: Easy Ways to Keep Ice Off 00:46 – Icy guides are your worst enemy 00:50 – There are a few remedies that prevent your guides from freezing over 01:00 – Olive oil cooking spray fantastic and affordable. Using one like Pam can save you a lot of time. Just remember to wipe off the excess 01:10 – Chapstick is another great remedy. Apply to your guides often as it wears off 01:30 – Keep reapplying cooking spray and chapstick when needed 01:40 - Silicone spray could be more of a permanent solution that I haven't tried. If you do, shoot me a message and let me know how it works 03:22 - You can safely remove ice from your guides by gently rubbing it with your fingers 03:40 - Slide the ice off the guides. Do not jam or force it off. This could damage your rod 03:45 - Water is much warmer than the air. Dip your iced guides in the water to melt it off 04:11 - Go to TheFlyCrate.com/free-trout-flies to get your FREE barbless Euro Nymphing Assortment your first month when you join our Troutbum Monthly Fly Club plan. In TFC #07, Nate discusses 4 easy fly fishing tips for winter. Seriously, don't get caught with your pants down without these. Tune in to learn how to kicka** in the winter months. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:25 – Today’s topic: 4 Lessons for Winter & Fall Fly Fishing 00:50 – Winter is great because no one goes out as much. That means you'll have the whole stream to yourself 01:20 – Colton is a talented fly fishermen 01:28 – He's been trying for ages to get me to come up to New York and fish steelhead with him. Then Nate tries to make a funny joke 01:40 – Tip #1 - Big fish like baitfish 02:02 – Do not tread on the redd. Redds are nesting areas for spawning trout and are easily seen. They are patches cleared of stones and rocks that expose the light colored bottom of the stream. Most of the time it is a near circle or oval 02:30 – Migrating fish are more territorial so this is a perfect chase to toss big boy streamers. Such as the Beef Curtain (TheFlyCrate.com/product/beef-curtain) and the Shumaker's Shimmering Minnow (TheFlyCrate.com/product/shumakers-shimmering-minnow) 03:05 Tip #2 - Don't give up. Winter is tough and requires more discipline. But, it is highly rewarding and can produce a lot of fish for you. It may take dozens of perfect presentations before you get a strike 03:28 - Trout group up in deep pools to rest. 03:40 - Keep moving. Explore the whole stream and maximize your day. 03:45 - Tip #3 - Be the delivery guy. Trout don't care what you give 'em as long as you drop it right on their nose. 04:22 - Be prepared for the cold and don't shy away. 04:40 - Invest in a good pair of gloves and never look back. 04:50 - Go to TheFlyCrate.com/four-fly-fishing-lessons-fall-winter to read Colton Orbaker's article entitled, Four Easy Fly Fishing Lessons For Fall. 05:10 – Go to TheFlyCrate.com/free-trout-flies to get your FREE barbless Euro Nymphing Assortment your first month when you join our Troutbum Monthly Fly Club plan. In TFC #06, Nate discusses weight and why it is important in winter. Tune in to learn how you can use weight to kicka** in the winter months. Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:19 – Today’s topic: How to Use Weight in Fall & Winter 00:30 – Throughout the winter months there is not a whole lot of topwater activity 00:52 – Nymphing and fishing streamers are your best bet, right now 01:02 – Trout migrate into deep pools and pockets in the winter, thus your flies have to get down deep 01:18 – Use split shots, tungsten putty, heavier flies, or build a multi-fly rig to get down deep 01:30 – Reusable tungsten putty from Orvis is fantastic and doesn't leave a residue on your line 02:00 – Split shots are great because you can adjust the weight or your rig with ease. Plus, there is only so much weight you can tie onto a fly 02:28 – Joe Humphreys is a master of using split shots and will even store a handful in his mouth 02:55 – Go to TheFlyCrate.com/flies-weight-fly-fishing to read more about Tyler Tasci's article, "Weight, What? Yea it’s true, you’re not getting deep enough!" 03:30 – Take a look at the flow of the water and how deep it is to determine how much weight you'll need. Basically, eye-ball the weight needed 03:50 – If you are snagging on the bottom all the time, you have too much weight. If your flies are being swept downstream quickly, add more weight. 04:00 – Find that happy medium. Not too much weight but just enough. 04:04 – Don't be afraid to adjust your weight. 04:06 Every hole and riffle will need difficult amounts of weight because the speed of water flow and water depth will vary 04:45 – Go to TheFlyCrate.com/free-trout-flies to get your FREE barbless Euro Nymphing Assortment your first month when you join our Troutbum Monthly Fly Club plan.
