When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. When you close your eyes and picture God, what do you see? When you think about the divine, supreme, immortal, eternal, all powerful, self-existent God who the Bible calls spirit and who by nature is invisible, what do you imagine? Perhaps the most asked question in Christian circles goes something like this -- What's God's will for my life? Am I where I'm supposed to be? Am I dating who I'm supposed to be? Did I buy the right house? Did I buy the right car? Am I living in the right state? Am I going on the right missions trip? What is God's will for my life? And this becomes such a buzzing question in Christian circles that there starts to develop a level of almost unhealthy anxiety about missing God's will for my life. So what's His will for your life? Bear fruit, do good stuff, get to know God more. Could it be that one of the things that keep churches from flourishing and thriving is that we've invented a form of Christianity without Christ? We've turned following Jesus into an event where we sing a lot of Jesus songs, but do very little of the Jesus stuff. I think there is potentially a reason your soul feels tired, and exhausted, and like it’s running on fumes and you’re not getting the results that you want from this thing called life… You’re trying to run a race on a broken leg. You’re trying to run a race on a broken soul. Lamenting is an art that we don’t often practice in Western culture. It’s really becoming a lost art in the Christian tradition. Rather than express our emotions, we just hide them, distract ourselves from feeling them, or pretend they don't exist. A loss of lament has led to malformation in the body of Christ. We’re taught to: smile, be happy, and cheer up. Which leads to a weak, fake, less than whole version of Christianity that feels thin and a soul that feels wounded and unsure of what to do. We are lonely, exhausted, hurried, rushed, frantic, stressed, anxious, sad, overworked, feeling under rewarded an empty soul. The prescription from society is to treat yourself. How's that working for you? Will getting all of this stuff actually take care of the emptiness that you feel on the inside? It doesn't matter how good the books are, or the music is... Jesus gives this iconic teaching on discipleship in the soul -- if anyone would come after me and deny himself, take his cross and follow me, He will gain His life. For whoever would save his life, that man will lose it. "21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord!This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? We are living in a constant state of information overload. It does not seem as if all of this information that we have at our disposal on our fingertips is making the situation any better. We know more than we've ever known before, and yet we are more worn out, exhausted, maxed out, and tapped out than we could dream of. In the midst of all of it, how's your soul? What are you watching, reading, or listening to that is intentionally or unintentionally shaping your thought life and setting course for your soul? You will not have a rested soul if you do not have a renewed mind. "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.2 Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." How's your soul? That's maybe the most important question, but the most unasked question. How is that internal composition of thoughts and emotions and desires and dreams and personality? How is the you that doesn't make the highlight real? How connected to God and purpose do you feel? How much shalom do you feel? How are your levels of shame? One measure for whether or not you're rested enough, besides falling asleep in board meetings, is to ask yourself this how much do I care about the things that I care about? How at rest do you feel? The pace you're running, the nose to the grindstone, whatever caffeine or nicotine or schedule, however early you're having to wake up, or however late you're having to stay up, or however much scrolling you're having to do to numb the pain on the inside so that you can just keep going a little bit harder, a little bit more, a little bit longer, because you're almost there -- is it working? Have you stopped asking? "I know you’ve asked God for something before. Maybe you got a clear no, or maybe a yes, but I think there’s many people here today that would admit that maybe you stopped asking because it didn’t seem like God was going to answer. So have you stopped asking God for the things you want or need?" If we’re honest, I think all of us would love to have a more powerful prayer life. Whether you are a seasoned saint, a fresh follower of Jesus, or unsure about what you believe, I think all of us would like to have a powerful prayer life but I think the problem is that we want that, but then overcomplicate prayer and misunderstand prayer, and then just stop praying. What would it look like to just keep asking? 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! "Only God can judge me", has shaped the world and cultural landscape that we live in. But is it true? Matthew 7:1 is perhaps not just the most quoted verse by non-Christians, it is probably also the most misused and misunderstood verse by humanity. We miss what Jesus is actually saying in His brilliant Kingdom sermon on the Mount. For many, if not most people today, there is no enemy other than the man who is not open to everything. In His sermon on the mount, Jesus actually gives a command on how to judge. It's not a command not to judge. It is a command on how to judge the word judge. Here in the Greek, it's a word, carino, and it means to distinguish or to make a decision, to make a calculated call based upon all of the evidence that that is at hand. In this sermon we take a dive into what it means to judge rightly, which is more needed in this time than ever. It's as if Jesus is saying that you aren't going to get the culture of the kingdom if you don't become a people of prayer. At the center of the center of the center of the King's heart for the Kingdom is this -- on earth as it is in heaven Jesus's thesis statement for the entire sermon and for the Lord's Prayer for his mission on planet Earth. For the life, hope, beauty, joy, and the shalom that permeates heavenly spaces to invade this space right here, right now, today.
