×There comes a time to know when to quit, this is that episode. I won’t get into all the details here but I did say when Nick and I restarted recording episodes that if I decided it was time to stop I would be sure to let everyone know this time instead of just disappearing. In this episode we announce the winner of Nick’s hardcover edition of Clumsy Predators and then we get into why it is time to wrap things up for the podcast. The content on YouTube may continue sporadically but so far as the podcast goes, it is time to wrap things up. We hope you understand. With that it is time to say so long, but we are not saying goodbye to any of you. Thank you for the time to share our love for the outdoors with you, we appreciate you all. Nick and I spend a bit of time catching up and then jump into a discussion about vinyl records. I know this is a bit out of the ordinary but we had spoken at the end of our last episode about how vinyl records had made such a comeback and the similarities between traditional archery/bowhunting and vinyl records. As you will hear we are a bit passionate about both and Nick and I really had a good time with this episode. We hope you enjoy it as well. Also, at the beginning and end of the episode we discuss a giveaway for listeners. Nick is giving away a copy of his book Clumsy Predators (https://amzn.to/4cCL0AF) in hardcover. Very generous gesture on Nick’s part! So to enter you will need to Like the post for this episode on the Traditional Outdoors Facebook Page ( https://www.facebook.com/TraditionalOutdoors ), share the post to your personal timeline and then comment on the post that you have completed these tasks and we will add your name into a random drawing and announce the winner on the next episode. Entries will end on August 25th and we will select a random participant and announce the winner on episode 150 in a few weeks. Don’t miss this chance to own a beautiful hardcover copy of Clumsy Predators!!!! The post Records and Recurves appeared first on Traditional Outdoors .…
Nick and I spend a bit of time having a discussion about a recent Facebook post that got our attention. The post we are talking about asked the question: “would our great grandfathers would be proud of the pursuit of trophy whitetails by hunters today?”. There was a good bit more unpack with that post and Nick and I just had a conversation much like we would have done had we been sitting around a campfire. Nothing we say here was meant to be an attack on the individual that made the post or to make it personal in any way, we do understand the point the person was trying to make, it was simply the thoughts that we had come to mind that found their way into our conversation and we recorded an episode while sharing those thoughts. We hope you enjoy and would love to hear your own thoughts on this topic. The post Proud Ancestors appeared first on Traditional Outdoors .…

Nick rejoins me for a podcast recording session for the first time in over a year. We spend the time catching up and sharing insights into our 2023 Whitetail seasons. Episode 138 finds me with mixed emotions. I recently tagged out on bucks in Georgia. However, both bucks I have taken in GA with my longbow were not perfect shots. The second buck was taken on 12/04/22 and the shot was a lot further back than I wanted. I ended up not tracking that buck and waited for 12 hours and then picked up his track with the help of a tracking dog. We found the buck just over 200 yards away but I would have much preferred a quicker, and cleaner kill. It happens to all bowhunters, we don’t like it but it just will happen if you shoot at enough critters. In this episode I share the hunt with you, my approach to recovery and details about what went wrong. Please subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher and leave a rating and review. In Episode 137 the topic for discussion is around pre-scouting vs going in blind or “run n gun” for whitetails. Really it is just my thoughts on the advantages for each method and a little of the thought process I use when choosing a location whether I am scouting in the off season for the coming year or if scouting from my computer to choose a location to go in blind. Hopefully you will find something in this episode that is useful for your future hunts. Please subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher and leave a rating and review. Episode 136 finds me running solo again. This episode is all about a recent successful bowhunt that came within inches of being a failed attempt. I took a shot at a whitetail buck at about 18 yards, I was focusing so hard on the spot I wanted to hit that I never even noticed the small limb just a few feet from my bow. The arrow struck the limb almost immediately on release and as I watch the arrow I expected a miss but watched while it appeared that my arrow bounced off the bucks shoulder or leg. What I found a half hour later when I went to retrieve my arrow is still a bit hard for me to believe and I was there. Hopefully some lessons to be learned in this episode, I hope you enjoy. Episode 135 Nick joins the podcast for a Thanksgiving 2022 episode to catch on success for the 2022 Whitetail season. Nick had success in early November at the Michigan Deer camp he nicknamed “Camp Classy” years ago. I also have had success with a nice 8 point buck in North Carolina with a muzzleloader and a public land doe with my longbow “Yankee”. On the day we recorded this episode I had morning success with a nice GA buck but that story is for a future episode. We hope you enjoy this episode and Happy Thanksgiving everyone! This week’s episode is a report on a week spent hunting hogs on public land in South Georgia. Thom joins me on the show to chat about the hunt this year. We had an amazing hunt this year after a hiatus for most participants in 2021 due to Covid. Plus with the last bug group hunt of 2020 experienced record high water levels this year the hunt felt like the first real opportunity to hunt and learn the areas of public land we were hunting. We had an amazing group of folks in camp, great accommodations, fabulous food and I believe most everyone saw pigs this year. Ok, maybe not a “great debate” but in Episode 123 I welcome Thom Jorgensen to join me as my co-host while we discuss the pros and cons of using a GPS vs a Cell phone for navigation when hunting. Specifically, when hunting with traditional archery gear and going into new locations. Cell phones have come a long way and for many activities I find they perform just fine if just wanting to from point A to point B in general terms. However, for capabilities beyond simple A to B navigation or if accuracy to within feet is desired I still prefer my trusty Garmin Montana. Would love to hear from our listeners on this one, what are your experiences and preferences? Also, we spend some time talking about a few other items. One being a great live cam Thom introduced me to this week. Check out the Nabibia Desert Live cam by copy and pasting this link in your browser – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydYDqZQpim8 also, I introduced Thom to a great case for his Garmin Montana called the Gizzmo Vest. I have been using one since I bought my Garmin Montana years ago. Thom ordered one this week and is very happy with his. You can check those out by heading over to http://www.gizzmovest.com/. We spend most of this episode discussing goals for 2022, neither of us are big on “New Year’s resolutions” but we both do like to set goals for ourselves for the coming year. I have been thinking about this alot the past couple of weeks and perhaps even the past few months. With my “new normal’ (I hate that term even more now but it does apply) I have set some very specific goals to begin as soon as deer season ends to begin preparing for next fall as well as some activities that have been put on hold the past couple of years. In this episode I am recording from the road (apologies for any road noise in advance) headed to Michigan for a hunt with good friends. While sitting in the car for 12 hours I had some time to record and ruminate, or “chew my cud” on a few things that have been on my mind the past couple of weeks. Part of the episode is related to seeking advice and wading through some of the bad advice out there and part is based on some advice I have for bow hunters based on a recent successful hunt in the Georgia woods. I do hope you enjoy and if the hunt this week went well then hopefully there will be something to record of interest on my drive back to Georgia. I hope you enjoy this one and maybe it will give you some things to ruminate on as well. In Episode #117, Nick and I are pretty steamed up with Social Media “Experts”, “That’s not trad” Nazis and the masses of foam hunting professionals. In this episode we get a lot of this off our chests and have some good natured fun in the process. We had fun and hope you will enjoy it as well. 1 T.O. Episode 116 – Good-bye to my dearest friend, hello to new bows and to future adventures 58:52
I am dedicating Episode #116 to my dearest friend and my wife of 23 years, Mrs. Lorrie Angell. I begin the show with an update regarding my wife. For anyone that does not know Lorrie lost her battle with cancer on August 22nd. From there Nick and I have a couple of new bows to chat about which leads into arrow dialog and we wrap up with discussions about the 2021 fall hunting season and future adventures planned or being planned. Should be a lot of excitement coming in the next year or so and we hope to have a lot to bring to the show as a result. In Episode #111, I am joined my Jason Samkowiak of the Traditional Bowhunting and Wilderness Podcast. We will be releasing this episode simultaneously on both the Traditional Outdoors Podcast and on the Traditional Bowhunting and Wilderness Podcast. In this episode Jason and I discuss Trail Cameras. We chat about the ways we have utilized trail cams in the past, tactics to use trail cameras effectively and how to NOT use them. We also talk about the things we like about these devices, the things we dislike, how they can be abused and ways we protect our cameras when we use them on public lands. Lots of ins and outs in this one and thus the title of this week’s episode. We hope you enjoy! In Episode #109, Nick and I have a great chat with Bryan Miller. Bryan is one of those individuals that spends a ton of time in the outdoors. He participates in everything from traditional bowhunting for whitetails to chasing snowshoe hares and even attending local 3d shoots. We had a great chat with Bryan and hope you enjoy it as much as Nick and I did. Also, as mentioned in the intro, for those that have reached out to me regarding the news of my wife’s current health situation, thank you so much for reaching out. If you had asked how you could help I am including the GoFund me page that I mention in this episode intro that was set up by one of my wife’s good friends. In Episode #108, Nick and I have a great chat with Ryan Bunting. Ryan operated the Hiking America YouTube channel. Ryan reached out to me a few weeks ago about being a guest on the show and I really enjoyed chatting with him, plus he had some interesting thoughts about discussion topics such as the interactions between hikers and hunters during hunting season. We had an amazing chat and I think you will enjoy it. Also if you are interested in contacting Scott Spray to bid on the fly rod he is auctioning to raise money for me and my wife while she is fighting cancer, Scott can be reached at carpflyfisher@gmail.com. The auction ends 12/13/2020 and remember there is also a guided fly fishing day trip for two included that David Johnson of River Through Atlanta Guide Service has added.
