Today I'm so glad to talk with bookstore owner and brand new author Annie B. Jones. Annie owns The Bookshelf, an independent bookstore in downtown Thomasville Georgia, and she’s the host of From the Front Porch, the store’s conversational podcast about books, small business, and life in the South. Annie talks about books, sells books, and now she’s written one of her own. It’s called Ordinary Time: Lessons Learned While Staying Put , and it releases into the world on this very day, April 22. Annie challenges the idea that loud lives are the ones that matter most and reminds us that we don't have to leave the lives we have in order to have the lives of which we've always dreamed. Not only do I commend this book to you, I also wrote the forward where I talk even more about my admiration for both Annie as a person and as a writer. Today we’re going to get into what could be magical about a quiet, ordinary life. I hope you’ll listen in. LINKS + RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE: Ordinary Time by Annie B. Here we are in Holy Week, just a few days before Easter. Before we arrive at the resurrection, we have to walk through the crucifixion. One of my favorite guides in the dark is Barbara Brown Taylor who wrote one of my top 10 favorite books of all time, Learning to Walk in the Dark . For today’s episode I want to offer a short reflection on walking in the dark – the challenges, yes. But also the necessity and the surprising gift. If you’ve been following along inside The Lent Collection, you’ll recognize this from Day 24. If not, I hope this simple reflection offers something for you to carry into the remainder of this Holy Week. Either way, I hope you’ll listen in. So far this year I’ve been engaging a simple little practice you can do right now that is helping me feel a little bit more grounded than I would without it. On a podcast about decision making, I'm always looking for ways to drop us into the middle of the process because I believe there is helpful nuance and insight there. So today I'm hosting a conversation about those things in our lives where we've maybe started something but we're not sure if they're worth finishing. You'll hear from listeners who were willing to answer the question, "what's something I'm trying that I'm still not sure about?" Let's see what insight we can take away while listening to other people. Listen in. My guest today is someone who is well acquainted with the decision fatigue that comes along with navigating questions about your faith. I’m so glad to welcome Erin Hicks Moon to talk about the questions we have but are hesitant to bring into the light, about what to say to people who question our faithfulness when we question our faith, and how to move beyond the deconstruction conversation into our next right thing with God, others and ourselves. Erin is the perfect person to have this conversation with as she’s been talking about and writing about this for many years. She also has a brand new book to help you if you’re wrestling thorough your own disentangling moment, I’ve Got Questions: The Spiritual Practice of Having it out With God. How can you hold onto your faith when you feel lost? How can you respond when people dont’ understand what you’re going through? What are some of the things no one talks about when they talk about deconstruction? We’ve got all of that and more with Erin Hicks Moon. Listen in.
