Joe Bates is a member of the Bad River Band, a Native American Tribe residing along Lake Superior in Wisconsin. He and his community have been embroiled in a long-standing legal and public relations battle against Enbridge, a Canadian energy company, to protect their ancestral lands. This struggle has been documented in "Bad River," a documentary film released in early 2024, which showcases Bates and his fellow activists within the band. Joe joins Jay to share his personal journey of activism, the profound influence of past generations of tribal and environmental activists on his own path, and the ongoing fight against Enbridge, which affects the future of water protection in America. At Scratchin’ the Itch we are ready to ask the big questions, speak truth to power. And who could be more powerful than A-list Hollywood celebrity, Billy Zane. Billy, we’re gonna put it to you straight, are you a troll? Did you convince Australian rock and roll royalty to name their kids after you? Do you bully people online for fun so that their “moms” need to start a club just to stop you? Do you eat the souls of the living? Do ya, huh? Well do ya, punk? All pertinent questions that demand answers. Perhaps, if Billy is too chicken to get back to us, they could be answered by some of these movers and shakers: The Living Eyes, Wet Blankets, Tough Age and King Raam. They got the good stuff as do many, many more inside. https://archive.org/download/Episode13_201502/episode%2013.mp3 TRACKLIST 1.
